Local Liberal Democrats in Sheffield have outlined how they are putting the City, and the surrounding Sheffield City Region, in pole position to benefit from £1billion investment announced by the Coalition Government. Sheffield City Council has been working with other local Councils, including outside of South Yorkshire, to create one of the first 'Local Enterprise Partnerships' in the country. This will take up the mantle of stimulating economic growth. As part of the move, supported by the Coalition Government, the regional quango Yorkshire Forward will be scrapped.

Sheffield MP and deputy prime minister Nick Clegg helped to launch the city's local Pakistan Flood Appeal on the steps of the Town Hall. Nick said the crisis in Pakistan was a catastrophe and called on the city to dig deep. "This catastrophe has seen an area the size of England flooded," he said. "It may not look as dramatic some one-off events but its consequences are profound and devastating and it is absolutely right that we mobilise our community to raise money and help those families who will be affected by this for months and years to come."

Local Liberal Democrats in Sheffield have welcomed the news that wheel clampers will be banned from operating on private land in Sheffield as part of moves to ban them across England and Wales.The new legislation, to be introduced by the Coalition Government in November, will result in anyone clamping a vehicle or towing it away on private land facing tougher penalties.

Sheffield City Council's Liberal Democrat Leader is encouraging Sheffield people to dig deep to help the people of Pakistan. Last month record heavy monsoons caused devastating floods in Pakistan. The region's worst flooding in 80 years has affected 20 million people and killed at least 1,500, according to the UN. Cllr Paul Scriven, said: "I know there are people across Sheffield who have families and loved ones over in Pakistan who have been affected by the flooding, and I'm calling on the generosity of Sheffielders to give what they can to help the Pakistan people through this horrific disaster."

Sheffielders have been asked to come forward with their money saving ideas as part of Sheffield City Council's drive to reduce its spending over the next four years, as a result of the £900 billion national debt left by Labour.

The Lib Dems on Sheffield City Council have revealed new figures which show that the new recycling service introduced is collecting double the amount of waste than the old service. The news will come as a blow to opposition councillors on Sheffield City Council who have described the new service as a "waste of money".

Sheffield has enhanced its reputation as the country's greenest city as it scooped a record number of awards for its parks and green spaces thanks to the Liberal Democrat Council. Sheffield is now the leading authority in the Yorkshire and Humberside region with 12 Green Flag Awards - the national standard for quality parks and green spaces. Six smaller open spaces also won prestigious Green Pennant Awards this year - doubling the city's quota from last year.

The Liberal Democrat Leader of Sheffield City Council has written to Corus, a local steel manufacturer, to welcome the announcement that they plan to take on over 150 new members of staff. The announcement by Corus brings the total number of new jobs at the Stocksbridge and Rotherham sites to over 310 since just a few months ago.

Liberal Democrats on Sheffield City Council have instructed Council officers to investigate using legal powers to create a public right of way through Sheffield Station. The move could end the long running dispute with East Midlands Trains (EMT) over public access to a bridge. Only last week the Lib Dem Leader of Sheffield City Council, Cllr Paul Scriven, criticised EMT refusing members of the public access over the bridge unless they had a ticket.

Liberal Democrats on Sheffield City Council are set to give local people the opportunity to put forward local green fields to be protected from development. Lib Dems have put a proposal to next weeks Council meeting which, if successful, will see local people asked to nominate a local green field to be protected as a 'Queen Elizabeth II Field'.

Primary schools in Sheffield are celebrating another year of improved exam results. Early results show that Sheffield's local school children are doing better than ever in basic subjects like Maths and English. The news comes as a boost for the Liberal Democrat Council's campaign to improve exam results, which had fallen to be amongst the worst in the country when Labour ran the Council.

Local 'people power' has been boosted thanks to Liberal Democrat councillors on Sheffield City Council today. Their proposal for a new petition scheme, which gives new powers to local people to force debates and summon senior council officers to answer questions, was passed at a meeting of Full Council.

The Lib Dem Leader of Sheffield City Council has reacted to yesterday's announcement that all of Sheffield's plans to rebuild and refurbish local secondary schools have been given the go ahead by the Coalition Government. Cllr Paul Scriven, Liberal Democrat Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: "I'm delighted that Nick Clegg and the Coalition Government have ensured that these improvements to Sheffield's schools will go ahead, despite the dire financial position Labour left us in nationally. Families and pupils right across the City will be delighted.

Mon 5th Jul 2010:

Council officers have advised members on Sheffield City Council that they estimate up to £200m of savings from the Council's budget will need to found over the next four years. The savings are required mainly because of the reduction in central government grant, which has been brought about thanks to the need to reduce the mountain of debt run up by the previous Labour Government.

The Liberal Democrat Leader of Sheffield City Council has criticised East Midlands Trains (EMT) after receiving complaints that access through the train station was blocked off today. Cllr Paul Scriven received complaints that EMT staff, accompanied by Police, would not allow members of the public access over the bridge unless they had a ticket.
