After only a short time in power the new Liberal Democrat Council is already delivering for Sheffield. Since the election in May Lib Dems have been working to try and ensure that local people can see a real difference with the Liberal Democrats in control. There has been action on a range of issues including protecting the environment, making local people feel safer, making the Council start to listen to local people, delivering basic services fairly for everyone and delivering better value for your money. Sheffielders' strong views against the closure of Post Offices will be heard next week when Liberal Democrat Councillors discuss proposals to close 16 branches in the city. For the first time since last week's announcement by the Post Office, members will debate the issue in public at a Cabinet meeting on 20 August. Tue 5th Aug 2008: Save our Post Offices - this is the message that Sheffielders will be sending out with the launch of the biggest campaign of its kind in the city today by the Liberal Democrat Council. Tue 22nd Jul 2008: Government Defeat Local People over Wisewood School. The controlling Liberal Democrat Group on Sheffield City Council have reluctantly been forced to drop plans to keep Wisewood School open thanks to being effectively blackmailed by the Labour Government. Despite the Lib Dems coming up with a plan to provide £25m for the two school solution, the Labour Government threatened to withdraw £100m investment from other Sheffield schools if the closure did not go ahead. Tue 15th Jul 2008: Labour blackmail Sheffield over two school solution. The Labour Minister for Schools has issued a threat to Sheffield over the move to overturn the merger of Wisewood and Myers Grove Schools in favour of a two school solution. Today the Minister for Schools, Jim Knight MP, refused to rule out Sheffield losing millions of investment for other Sheffield schools if the Council went ahead with the two school solution. The move came despite a commitment from the Council to fund the extra £25m needed to deliver two schools. Fri 11th Jul 2008: It's in the Bag - Lib Dems deliver FREE green waste sacks. Lib Dem's in charge of Sheffield City Council are making good on their promise to help local residents recycle their garden waste by providing supplies of free green waste sacks. Previously the Council charged local people £3 for three green waste sacks. Local people are now be able to pick up their sacks and arrange for them to collected once full - all for free! Wed 9th Jul 2008: Lib Dems investment 'sign' of things to come. Liberal Democrat Sheffield City Council have allocated £200,000 for Sheffield's biggest-ever street sign maintenance programme. Street signs in Sheffield will be given a thorough overhaul over the next few months to improve the general appearance of the city and to make it easier to get around the road network. Tue 1st Jul 2008: Liberal Democrats put parents in the driving seat for local Education. Sheffield parents are to be put in the driving seat for education through ballots on proposed changes to their local school from now on. Liberal Democrat Sheffield City Council are to introduce the measures for any academy or trust school proposals. Mon 30th Jun 2008: Labour MP'S plan to scupper two school solution rejected. Local Lib Dems have rejected claims from Sheffield's Labour MPs and reaffirmed their commitment to a two school solution. Sheffield's Liberal Democrats are reacting to the news that Sheffield's five Labour MPs have ignored local people and are 'throwing their full weight behind' the merger of Wisewood and Myers Grove Schools. Lib Dem Council to 'Buy Local' in bid to boost local business. The new Liberal Democrat Council Leader today announced his intention for the Council to introduce a 'Buy Local' Policy aimed at increasing the proportion of goods and services that the Council purchases from local business. The move will boost local business and create a more sustainable local economy to aid the battle against climate change. Mon 23rd Jun 2008: Sheffield's Lib Dem Leader Fights for Flood Money. Government officials have turned down Sheffield's bid for work on two key areas of the City under threat from flooding. The Liberal Democrat leader of Sheffield City Council is now demanding that Sheffield gets its fair share of investment to prevent flooding. Cllr Paul Scriven has written to the Environment Agency to object to their decision not to fund work. Tue 10th Jun 2008: Liberal Democrats give power to Communities to Decide Priorities . Decision making about some local services is moving away from the Town Hall to local people. Communities are to be given control of £50,000 currently allocated to their area and will be able to prioritise what it is spent on. They will make decisions about how much of the £50,000 is allocated between parks, libraries, and street cleaning, and how it will be spent via their local area panel. Mon 9th Jun 2008: 'Hands On' Council Leader to sit on Burngreave Board. The new Liberal Democrat leader of Sheffield City Council will take a place on the Burngreave New Deal for Communities Board. Cllr Paul Scriven will take a 'hands on' approach to ensure that management of the board improves after an independent audit found serious failings. He is determined to get the best deal for Burgreave and ensure value for money for taxpayers. Thu 29th May 2008: Weekly Bin Collections to Stay Under the Lib Dems. The new Liberal Democrat Sheffield City Council have announced that they will be keeping weekly black bin collections. The news comes despite Labour Party claims that Lib Dems intended to end weekly collections if they gained control of the Council. Leaflets distributed by the Labour Party at the local elections falsely claimed that local people had '24 hours to save their weekly bin collection' as they where under threat from the Lib Dems. Wed 21st May 2008: Low Council Tax Priority for new Lib Dem Council. The new Liberal Democrat Council have outlined their commitment to delivering a low as possible Council Tax. They have made clear their commitment to deliver value services, particularly as local people feel the pinch from cost of living increases. Councillor Simon Clement-Jones, Cabinet member for Finance and Customer Focused Services, said: - "We are committed to achieving at least a below inflation Council Tax increase in year one, with a longer term target for no increase in Council Tax."
