The ruling Liberal Democrats on Sheffield City Council have revealed that they saved local taxpayers £1,610,000 on publicity costs in 2008/09 compared to the previous financial year when Labour were in control at the Town Hall. Cllr Simon Clement-Jones, Liberal Democrat Cabinet member for Finance and Customer Focused Services, said: "I'm delighted that the Liberal Democrats have been able to make good on our commitments. As a result of insisting that costs are driven down, local taxpayers have saved a huge £1.6m compared to what Labour used to spend on publications."

The three local Liberal Democrat councillors that represent Stocksbridge have given their reaction to the news that 379 of the approximately 700 local Corus jobs are to be axed. In a joint statement, Cllr Martin Brelsford, Cllr Alison Brelsford and Cllr Jack Clarkson, said "These job cuts will come as a huge blow to the area we represent. Many local families will be devastated by this and they will still be trying to get over the shock."

The Liberal Democrat leadership on Sheffield City Council have agreed a huge £9,200,000 programme to help get local people back into work. The move comes as part of a concerted effort to help local people beat the credit crunch. The huge fund, agreed at the Council's Cabinet meeting this week, will pay for a four year programme that will support local jobseekers back into work and help employers to recruit local people.

Extra support is being given to rural areas of Sheffield to help residents ensure their villages remain vibrant communities. Liberal Democrat councillors on Sheffield City Council's new Northern Community Assembly have agreed to fund a part-time village officer who will work with local people to identify improvements the community would like to see - such as a new playground or car park, help them apply for funding to enable the work to take place and share good ideas and develop closer links between neighbouring communities.

Labour Councillors on the North East Community Assembly have agreed to buy the infamous New Deal for Burngreave 'Bling Bus'. It cost £130,000 of public money and was equipped with top-of-the range equipment. At the time the decision to purchase the custom made bus was met with widespread criticism due to it's price and the £30,000 a year running costs. But now the cash-strapped organisation is selling its custom-built 'bling mobile' to the Labour controlled Community assembly for a knockdown £20,000.

Liberal Democrats on Sheffield City Council have reacted to the news that FirstBus intend to make cuts to local bus services that would see the service reduced by 3%. Cllr Ian Auckland, Liberal Democrat Cabinet member for Sustainable Transport and Streetscene, said: "I'm bitterly disappointed that FirstBus have registered these cuts to local bus services. We are completely opposed to these cuts and we call on FirstBus to see sense and drop them immediately."

Small businesses in Sheffield have saved over a quarter of a million pounds during the credit crunch thanks to the Liberal Democrats. The Lib Dem Council has been working with local business across the city to encourage those who are eligible for business rate relief to apply. Small business rate relief is available to businesses with a rateable value below £15,000. Already hundreds of businesses have come forward, but there is still more money to be saved.

Liberal Democrats in Sheffield have thanked voters after celebrating seeing their share of the vote increase in last week's European Elections. In stark contrast the Labour Party vote collapsed by over 9%, a much greater decline than many other Yorkshire areas including Leeds, York and Kirklees. In addition the Tory share of the vote saw a decrease in Sheffield and the Green Party also failed to make an impact after being beaten into fifth place.

Liberal Democrats on Sheffield City Council are set to propose that Sheffield rules itself out of any ID Cards pilot or feasibility study. The news comes after the recent announcement that there will be an ID Cards pilot in Manchester, starting in Autumn this year. The Lib Dems will put the proposal to a meeting of full Council tomorrow as part of a motion which will oppose the Labour Government's ID Cards scheme.

In light of the recent scandal over MPs expenses, the controlling Liberal Democrat Group on Sheffield City Council are proposing for councillors expenses to become more transparent and open to public scrutiny. Cllr Paul Scriven, the Liberal Democrat Leader of Sheffield City Council, said "I'm sure that local people will be glad to know that under the system for councillors there isn't the ability to claim for dog food, duck ponds or the cleaning of moats. However, it's still vital that we are as transparent and open as possible when it comes to the use of public money."

Simon Hughes, Liberal Democrat spokesman for Energy and Climate Change and the Lib Dem Sheffield Council Leader, Cllr Paul Scriven, have added their voice to the drive against climate change. They are promoting a local scheme aimed at reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality.

Colin Taylor, the new Liberal Democrat Sheffield City Councillor for East Ecclesfield, has revealed that he raised an amazing £1,350 for charity by completing three half marathons in April, at the same as campaigning to become a councillor.Colin explained that he had already agreed to support an outreach project in Malawi before the 30th April by-election was announced. Colin said "When I heard about the problems faced by the people in Monkey Bay, Malawi I felt that I had to do something to support them."

Local Liberal Democrats have welcomed the u-turn by local Labour MPs over publishing their expenses. In May 2007 Clive Betts, Meg Munn and Angela Smith all voted to keep MPs expenses secret by excluding them from Freedom of Information requests. Despite previously failing to vote to make MPs expenses public, the five Sheffield Labour MPs have now stated they plan to follow in the footsteps of the local Lib Dem MP Nick Clegg and make their expense claims public.

Tue 19th May 2009:

Hundreds of Sheffield school children are to be given free fruit and vegetables every day thanks to the local Liberal Democrats. Over 800 pupils, from three Sheffield schools, will begin receiving free fruit at school thanks to Sheffield's Healthy Towns Programme, led by NHS Sheffield in partnership with Lib Dem Sheffield City Council. The pilot scheme will offer pupils fruit and vegetables including strawberries, sugar snap peas, apples, bananas, pears and carrots. And if the pilot is successful, it will be rolled out to hundreds of young people across Sheffield within the next two years.

Mon 18th May 2009:

The National Liberal Democrat Leader and local MP Nick Clegg has helped Sheffield's local Lib Dem Council launch their new flagship anti-social behaviour and crime initiative. Nick and the Lib Dem Council Leader, Cllr Paul Scriven, were in Broomhall talking to local residents about how new 'Community Justice Panels' will help reduce crime and re-offending rates, give local people greater confidence in the justice system and see offenders pay back their local community.
