Cllr Paul Scriven, Sheffield Liberal Democrat Group Leader and Sheffield Central Parliamentary spokesman, has outlined his commitment to retaining Victorian facades of buildings. Paul made the pledge as he raised concerns over some sub-standard new buildings which have risen around the city centre in recent years.

Paul said: "As Sheffield moves forward, we clearly have to project a bold and confident image for the future but we also have to ensure we retain links with our proud and strong past.

"I see no reason why, with new developments like the new retail quarter, some of the old Victorian facades cannot be retained and new buildings developed around them.

"If we take control of the council, we would pursue that option as we believe it is right both for the retail quarter and the city centre."

"Square boxes with no character are not things that successful cities are built on," he added.
